Eggs

Our  Rhode Island Reds produce nice sized eggs in a variety of colors.   Because of the natural foods we feed (natural grains, pasture and bugs) the yolks range from a brilliant yellow to dark orange.  On average, our hens produce  large to jumbo size eggs.

We like lots of color in our flock.  In mid 2006 we purchased a variety of Heritage breed chicks that will be part of our egg production flock in 2007.  Breeds include Dominiques, Barred Rocks, Partridge Rocks, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Americanas (the easter egg layers), Delawares, Black Australorps, and Leghorns.  We like the fact that some of these breeds are considered rare and that we are helping to preserve and maintain these breeds.

Our "girls" enjoy the great outdoors from sunrise to sunset.  We do keep them inside at night to protect them from the night predators.  They are as close to being free ranged as we can get without risking their lives to predation.

Naturally raised and pastured hens produce not only the best tasting eggs but also produce the most  nutritious eggs.   Researchers have  found that pastured poultry produce eggs that are high in Omega Three's which provide good nutrition for you and your family. Despite what you have heard about cholesterol levels, eggs provide excellent nutrition in a well balanced diet.
